Whenever a major prize-giving event approaches, one notices a clamor to include fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything in 2014
- Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
- Just some brain-teasers scraped into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're compact experiences, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge game development, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
